Shotup Herbicide for Fireweed Control;

Shotup Herbicide gives very good control of fireweed and associated weeds such as thistles.  It is registered for boom application at 1.5 L/ha and spot spray at 500mL per 100L Water.  It should be used in predominantly grass-based pastures. Both Kikuyu and couch grass may see transitory yellowing from Shotup Herbicide.  Follow up the treatment with a high volume spot spraying with Grazon Extra Herbicide or Shotup, depending on the other weeds present.

When small infestations of fireweed are identified, act immediately to prevent the situation from becoming worse and to increase the likelihood of containment, by spot spraying. Early detection and removal of Fireweed is vital. Seeds are long-lived in the soil and produced in large quantities, so seeding prevention is important. Continued vigilance for new outbreaks is required to prevent the establishment of the weed.

Shotup Herbicide for Lantana Control:

Lantana can be treated using Shotup Herbicide using a foliar spray application at a rate of 500 to 700 mL/100 L of water. This method can be used in any Australian state or territory.

The best time to treat for control of lantana is from December through April, although if conditions allow treatment, it can be as early as October or as late as July. Lantana is a heavily branched shrub that can grow as compact clumps and dense thickets as well as a scrambling and climbing vine. The stems are square with small, recurved prickles along the edges. The leaves are bright green above, paler beneath, about 6 cm long, with rounded, toothed edges. Leaves grow opposite one another along the stem. Flowers appear most of the year in clustered compact heads about 2.5 cm in diameter. Flower colours vary from pale cream to yellow, white, pink, orange, red, lilac and purple. Many lantana forms are poisonous to livestock. The toxic components in lantana include the triterpene acids, lantadene A (rehmannic acid), lantadene B and their reduced forms. Most cases of lantana poisoning occur in animals newly introduced into areas where toxic lantana grows. Animals bred in such country rarely show signs of poisoning.

Questions and answers from customers

How long does Shotup Herbicide take to affect fireweed?

  1. Q How long does Shotup Herbicide take to affect fireweed?
Asked by Patricia Lamoreaux on September 29, 2022 11:44 am
    Answered by the admin

The maturity of the Fireweed will influence the length of time it takes Shotup Herbicide to be effective.  Younger plants (seedlings) will be controlled in 7-10 days, whereas mature plants and flowering plants are harder to kill and take longer (2-3 weeks).  A repeat spray will be commonly required on mature Fireweed stands to complete an effective kill of the plants.

  2. What ratio do you mix Shotup Herbicide for a splatter gun on Lantana?

  3. Q What ratio do you mix Shotup Herbicide for a splatter gun on Lantana?
Asked by Dave on August 18, 2022 12:11 pm
    Answered by the admin

Shotup Herbicide does not have applications listed for Splatter / Gas Powered guns, so we can't recommend it for this use.  In some situations where users apply ShotUp Herbicide 'off-label', they use the same rate advised to be mixed with 100L of water and mix it with 10L of water.  If the rate was 700mL/100L, they mix it at 700mL/10L Water for their splatter gun.

Tips For Use

Restraints:

  • Do not apply to crops or weeds which are not actively growing or to plants that may be stressed (not actively growing) due to prolonged periods of extreme cold, moisture stress (water-logged or drought-affected) or previous herbicide treatment as crop damage or reduced levels of control, may result.
  • Do not spray if rain is likely to occur within one hour.
  • Avoid double overlaps to reduce the risk of injury to rotational crops the following season.
  • Do not apply by aerial application.

Minimum Recropping Periods:

  • Aminopyralid remains active in the soil for extended periods depending on the rate of application, soil type (clay content), rainfall, temperature, humidity, soil moisture and soil organic matter. Refer to the directions for use that show plant-back periods for particular crops following the application of Shotup Herbicide in different areas in Australia.

Protection Of Crops, Natives And Other Non-Target Plants:

  • Do not use on land to be cultivated for growing susceptible crops for up to 20 months of applying Choice Shotup, except where indicated in the Minimum Recropping Periods section of the General Instructions.
  • Legumes, vines, vegetables, cotton, tomatoes, ornamentals and many other plants are highly susceptible to this herbicide during both growing and dormant periods.
  • Cereal crops, canola and grasses can be sown safely after using Shotup Herbicide.
  • This product will kill legumes (clovers, medics) present in the crop at the time of spraying.
  • In the season, following the application of this product, the regeneration or establishment of sensitive legumes (clover, medics, peas, and lupins) may be adversely affected by soil residues.
  • Do not allow spray to drift onto sensitive native vegetation or susceptible crops, such as cotton, tomatoes, vines, fruit, potatoes, vegetables, ornamentals, tobacco, lupins and other legumes, safflower, sugar beet, hops, flowers or shade trees.
  • Do not use it under meteorological conditions or with spraying equipment that is likely to produce drift.
  • Minimise spray drift by using low pressures and nozzles, which do not give a fine droplet size.
  • Do not apply close to or on areas containing roots of desirable vegetation, where the treated soil may be washed to areas growing or to be planted to desirable plants, or on sites where surface water from heavy rain can be expected to run off to areas containing or to be planted to susceptible crops or plants.
  • Do not move soil, which may have been sprayed, to areas where desirable plants are to be grown.

Management Of Residues In Compost, Mulches And Animal Waste:

  • Do not cut pasture for hay or silage production within 6 months of application, where it is intended for use off-farm.
  • Do not cut cereals intended for hay or silage production within 6 weeks of application, where it is intended for use off-farm.
  • Do not use treated plant material to make mushroom substrate.
  • Do not send straw from treated crops off-farm for these purposes or for animal bedding.
  • Do not send animal manure, dairy shed and feed pad effluent that has been collected from animals grazing or fed crops treated within the previous 6 months (pasture) or 6 weeks (cereals) off-farm.
  • Spreading/irrigating this manure/effluent may cause damage to clover and other susceptible plants.
  • Do not send compost made from animal waste that has been collected from animals grazing or fed crops treated within the previous 6 months (pasture) or 6 weeks (cereals) off-farm.
  • Such compost may cause damage to clover and other susceptible plants.
  • Do not apply animal waste (e.g. manure, slurry) collected from animals grazing or fed crops treated within the previous 6 months (pasture) or 6 weeks (cereals) to susceptible plants or land to be used to grow susceptible plants.
  • Do not grow susceptible plants within the relevant plant back period in fields treated with manure/effluent from farms where animals have grazed or been fed treated plants until a field bioassay shows there are no residues in the soil at levels injurious to the susceptible plants (see the crop rotation section in the directions for use label).
  • To promote herbicide decomposition, manure should be evenly incorporated in the surface soil. Breakdown of residues in decomposing plants or manure is more rapid under warm, moist soil conditions and may be enhanced by supplemental irrigation.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Safety Directions:

  • It will damage the eyes.
  • It will irritate the skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • If the product is in the eyes, wash it out immediately with water.
  • If the product is on the skin, immediately wash the area with soap and water.
  • Wash hands after use.
  • When opening the container, preparing spray and using prepared spray wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist and a washable hat, elbow-length PVC gloves and goggles.
